4.5 acres made up of rolling grass with 5 ponds, 2 streams, island beds and borders, wild area, marsh and many specimen trees. Valerie Alston’s garden design shows her life-long love of plants collected from many sources over the years. Started following the great gale in 1987 they have been developed with the aim of creating interest and colour for the whole year. Although the collection covers many types of plants, shrubs and trees it is worth seeing the fritillaries (April), Hellebores (Feb-May), Orchids (June). A number of sculptures around the Gardens expand into the Annual Sculpture Trail from 28th to 31st August with fifty sculptures on view. The Gardens are adjacent to Alby Crafts where the Saffron Tea Room serves home-made food all day including delicious lunches. Included also is the Gallery, the Gift Shop and the Craft Workshops. On the A140, 4 miles north of Aylsham and 6 miles south of Cromer.
Those who haven’t visited the Bressingham Gardens lately are certainly missing a treat, for there have been important additions and changes to this Gardener’s paradise. The late Alan Bloom’s Dell Garden created from 1953 with over 50 immaculate Island Beds of more than 4,500 varieties of perennials, and Adrian Bloom’s spectacular Foggy Bottom garden with views and vistas of year round colour are worth a visit on their own. Both gardens are now linked with new gardens, in total covering 16 acres. Follow the Foggy Bottom Trail from the Summer Garden with its National Collection of Miscanthus, through the Dell Garden to the Fragrant Garden, and Adrian’s Wood, planted with a wide range of plants of North American origin to the final destination of the delightfully peaceful Foggy Bottom Garden, famous too for its use of conifers.
