New NGS Garden Featured On The Norfolk Gardens Lovers Guide
The “NEW” National Gardens Scheme garden Conifer Hill, Starston will have been seen by nearly sixty thousand people already this year. It’s garden image was chosen for the front cover of the 2009 Norfolk NGS guide, the local county leaflet. It is open for the first time on May 24th (11-5) although it was open previously, over 20 years ago. It is one of fourteen new NGS gardens open in Norfolk.
The house (1881) also providing "Bed and Breakfast" for many years, has a formal terrace of rose beds and lavender set in its mature 3½ acre garden. It is surrounded by woodland, unusual trees and flowering shrubs, fern, stump walk and interesting pinetum in a quarry. Of particular interest is the kitchen garden with double border and contemporary yew roundel with its tactile sculpture.
Patricia and Richard Lombe-Taylor can be spotted most days in the garden. Richard’s preference however is to work on the Kitchen garden. Patricia can often be found getting on with the general maintenance, weeding with their unusual wheelbarrow designed from a old tin bath.
Patricia said “it is such a privilege to have our garden featured. I hope it will encourage people to come and explore and enjoy the gardens. It is also an opportunity to discover another part of the county for many with admission for children free and to support the charities funded by the National Gardens Scheme”.
Assistant County organiser Jim Saunt said “it is very hard to choose a image as Norfolk NGS have so many gardens with outstanding features. However new gardens will often create that extra interest as they have the snoop factor of looking over the gate of private gardens”.
