Croft House Garden in Dersingham has been developed in part of the grounds of Dersingham Hall. This new garden covers 2.5 acres, adjacent to the Sandringham Estate, the Village Church of St Nicholas, and an ancient Tithe Barn. The soil is a mixture of Lower Greensand, and chalk eroded from the nearby escarpment.
The house is surrounded by lawns, set off by shrubs and herbaceous planting, with many landscape features and areas of special interest. The backdrop is a copse of mature woodland, under-planted with bulbs and flowering shrubs from both hemispheres, many exotic and unusual. The wood is subdivided by hedging to create garden rooms, utilising the clearings in the wood.
Grass and gravel paths take the visitor on a journey of discovery, leading to a secluded summer house in its own cottage garden, a foliage garden, two informal ponds surrounded by jungle-style planting, and many hidden surprises.
Approaching the house again the path meanders through formal shrub and flower beds, an orchard including quince, mulberry, and medlar trees, and finally a vegetable garden and fruit cage, sheltered by variegated hedges. Low walls enclose a paved picnic area with an armillary sundial and a decorative water-feature.
A conservatory displays many exotic plants and overlooks a paved courtyard with formal pond and fountain, and an unusual gravel mosaic. A feature of our garden is the flowering shrubs that produce a display of colour from spring to autumn, when seasonal leaf colouration takes over.
